T20 World Cup

T20WC final at home will be 'moment of our careers' – Meg Lanning

Australia Women news

Meg Lanning, captain of the Australia women's national team, and her team are looking forward to the chance to play a World Cup final at home, before a record-breaking crowd at the MCG.

The ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2020 has set the ambitious goal of selling out the MCG, bringing in 93,000 people to watch the final on 8 March, International Women's Day. Adding to the occasion was the announcement this week that Katy Perry, one of the biggest pop stars in the world, would perform her songs at the final.

Australia, the defending champions, have been in spectacular T20I form, and are hungry to lift another trophy – their fifth in the tournament – in very special circumstances.

"It's certainly coming up very quickly!" Meg Lanning told presspersons at an event to mark 100 days to go for the tournament. "I hope it's going to be the moment of our careers.

"That's something to look forward to, playing in front of 93,000 at the MCG. I've been in the crowd, watching big games, but to think potentially we could be out in the middle, with all those fans there, certainly [is] an exciting prospect.

"And Katy Perry – added bonus!"

Since the start of 2018, Australia have won a remarkable 23 of 26 T20I games played. Lanning, however, knows that reaching the final of a World Cup won't be easy. She expects an "even competition" and the team to fight for their place.

"We're in a good spot in Australian cricket. We've had some success over the last few months," she admitted. "But World Cups are extremely hard to win and we're going to have to put in a lot of hard work to get the result we want.

"[It's a] very even competition. It'll be the best ever. Anyone who comes along will see some very high-quality cricket and really exciting games. So I encourage everyone to come along."
