Apart from squad for the two ODIs against Ireland, the selectors on Wednesday (April 23) also announced a 15-strong squad for the one-off Twenty20 International against England, to be played at The Oval in London on May 22.
Mahela Jayawardena, Kumar Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Lasith Malinga, the newly appointed T20I captain, and Rangana Herath were all left out of the 15-member squad to face Ireland, which will be captained by Angelo Mathews.
There were call-ups for Chathuranga de Silva and Niroshan Dickwella, both of whom are yet to make their international debuts, while Kithuruwan Vithanage and Ashan Priyanjan, both middle-order batsmen, were also included, the latter having played two matches in the Asia Cup including the final against Pakistan.
Vithanage and Priyanjan have already impressed in their brief international careers so far. After four Tests, all against Bangladesh following his debut in Galle last year, Vithanage averages 69.66.
Priyanjan has played seven ODIs and averages 33.33, making 74 on debut against Pakistan in December.
Priyanjan, Vithange and Chathuranga were also included in the squad for the one-off T20I against England. Missing from the T20I squad is the veteran pair of Jayawardena and Sangakkara, who retired from T20Is after the ICC World Twenty20 2014.
