The 2022 T20 World Cup form guide: Moeen finds his mojo

T20 World Cup

Hit For Six!
-

Moeen Ali saved his best for last at the IPL season, producing a performance that gave Chennai Super Kings something to cheer despite a loss in their final regular-season match against Rajasthan Royals.

The England all-rounder lit up the Powerplay, hitting six boundaries in a row off one single Trent Boult over, before falling just short of a century.

Ali’s 57-ball 93 was the sole high point with the bat for Chennai, and he followed it up with fine figures of 1/21 from four overs as well as taking a decent slip catch to remove compatriot Jos Buttler early on.

The final flourish carried on a form revival from the England all-rounder, whose slow start to the IPL campaign would have been a concern to his national selectors.

But the world’s third-highest ranked all-rounder finishes his 2022 IPL campaign with 244 runs to his name at a respectable strike rate of 137.85.

And with the ball Moeen continues to return extremely useful figures. He finishes the IPL with eight wickets to his name and an impressive economy rate of just 6.62. Of the bowlers to have bowled at least as many as his 23.5 tournament overs, only the heralded Sunil Narine and Mohsin Khan possess lower economies.

Afghanistan

Leg-spinner Rashid Khan continues to impress at the IPL and looks certain to play a major part in Afghanistan's fortunes at the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Rashid has 18 wickets so far for Gujarat Titans and his economy rate of 6.94 is inside the top 12 for all bowlers at the tournament.

Australia

There's a distinct Australian touch at the Delhi Capitals, with Ricky Ponting coaching a side that includes powerful opener David Warner and in-form all-rounder Mitch Marsh.

Warner is the fifth leading run scorer at the IPL this season with 427 runs from 11 innings, while Marsh has 251 runs from just seven knocks.

Experienced T20 performers Glenn Maxwell (268 runs for Royal Challengers Bangalore) and Marcus Stoinis have showed glimpses of good form, while veterans Matthew Wade and Aaron Finch are yet to really fire.

Seamer Josh Hazlewood has been in good touch and has 15 wickets to his name with Royal Challengers Bangalore, but Test skipper Pat Cummins has been sent back to Australia with a hip complaint.

England

The runs might be slowly starting to dry up for Jos Buttler, but the dynamic opener remains way out in front as the leading run scorer at this year's edition of the IPL.

Buttler has amassed a whopping 627 runs from 13 hits for Rajasthan Royals, with his three centuries and three half-centuries coming at the front end of the tournament.

Compatriot Liam Livingstone has put together a strong tournament with 388 runs from 13 innings for Punjab Kings, while all-rounder Ali found form as the tournament went on, performing well with the ball and finishing with his highest-ever IPL score of 93 for Chennai Super Kings.

India

A host of India batters are scoring well at this year's IPL and none more so than consistent opener KL Rahul who is second on the leading run scorer charts.

Rahul has compiled 537 runs from 14 innings for (Lucknow Super Giants), while veteran Shikhar Dhawan (421 runs for Punjab Kings) is also inside the top 10 for most runs at the tournament.

All-rounders Shreyas Iyer (401 runs) and Hardik Pandya (413) have been in good touch, while Virat Kohli (309 runs) showed glimpses of his previous best with an excellent 73 against the Titans.

Yuzvendra Chahal is the leading wicket-taker at the tournament with 26 scalps, moving two clear of Wanindu Hasaranga.

Kuldeep Yadav continues to impress and has 20 scalps, while fellow left-armer Thangarasu Natarajan and experienced pacer Mohammed Shami have collected 18 wickets apiece.

Star man Jasprit Bumrah has 12 scalps for Mumbai Indians after a season that failed to reach the heights of previous campaigns.

New Zealand

Right-hander Devon Conway has been in good touch for Chennai Super Kings with 252 runs from seven innings and could be set for a big T20 World Cup if he can continue that form.

Experienced skipper Kane Williamson has 216 runs for Sunrisers Hyderabad, while there are a host of New Zealand bowlers doing well for their respective IPL franchises.

Tim Southee has 14 wickets for Kolkata Knight Riders, while Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson have 13 and 12 wickets respectively for their teams.

Seamer Adam Milne had a blink-and-miss IPL season. Playing for Chennai Super Kings, he sustained a hamstring injury in the very first game and was ruled out for the remainder of the tournament.

Compatriots Marco Jansen (seven scalps for Sunrisers Hyderabad) and Dwaine Pretorius (six wickets for Chennai Super Kings) have also looked good at times, while stylish left-hander Quinton de Kock is leading the way for Lucknow Super Giants with 502 runs following his superb century against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Aiden Markram isn't far behind with 360 runs for Sunrisers Hyderabad, while David Miller (381 runs for Gujarat Titans) has also impressed.
