Kusal Mendis has been named as Kusal Perera’s replacement in Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 International squad for the two-match series in Bangladesh.
Perera, who figured in the original 15-man squad, has a side strain, and a Sri Lanka Cricket statement on Tuesday (13 February) explained: “According to medical advice, Perera needs more time to recover from the side strain, which he suffered during the 2nd match Sri Lanka played against Zimbabwe in the concluded ODI Tri-Series in Bangladesh.”
Sri Lanka went on to win the tournament, beating Bangladesh in the final by 79 runs.
Mendis, meanwhile, had a good time in the Tests in Bangladesh following the ODIs, scoring 196 in Sri Lanka’s only innings in the drawn first Test in Chittagong, and then scoring 68 and seven in the second Test, played in Dhaka, which Sri Lanka won by 215 runs to take the series 1-0.
The Sri Lankans, who have rested Suranga Lakmal for the two T20Is, will be led by Dinesh Chandimal as Angelo Mathews recovers from his latest injury setback.
Jeevan Mendis, who last represented Sri Lanka in a match against Afghanistan during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, has been recalled and, to add depth to the bowling attack, Sri Lanka have picked Jeffrey Vandersay, the leg-spinner, Amila Aponso, a left-arm spinner, and young pacers in Asitha Fernando and Shehan Madushanka, who picked up a hat-trick in that tri-series final in what was his international debut.
The two T20Is will be played in Dhaka (15 February) and Sylhet (18 February).
